SOMERVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Somerville resident Peggy Griffith says she can really tell when it's allergy season.

"When my allergies hit, my eyes are watery," she said. "My nose is stuffy. I have a sore, itchy throat and I sneeze."

She adds that her chest is heavy. "It makes you not be able to breathe," Griffith said.

The beautiful blooms are a signal that allergy season is here. There are specific allergens making us sick right now, and not the heavy yellow pollen on the cars, according to Allergist, Dr. Mahipal Ravipati,

"It is mostly the tree and grass pollen that is out in the air," Dr. Ravipati said. "On windy, warm days, that's when the pollen is going to be very high in the air."

Dr. Ravipati says if this is the first time you've had seasonal allergies, you might find some answers as close as your neighborhood drug store.

"Unlike in the past, there are many, many good prescription medications that are over the counter now. So they can try many of those that are non-drowsy, and they can be very helpful."

A "patient patient," Griffith says just stick to it. "Just stay on your meds. Do not get off your meds."

If the symptoms get worse, it is advised to see a specialist.
