FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team is ranked No. 2 in the first set of NCAA Division II South Region rankings. The Lions, who fell four spots to No. 13 in the latest NFCA Top 25 poll, are 31-8 on the season, including a 23-7 in-region record.
Valdosta State held the top spot in both polls. The Blazers are No. 1 in the NFCA rankings for the fourth straight week and open as the top-ranked team in the South Region. Sunshine State Conference leader Rollins is third in the region, followed by UAH at No. 4 and Shorter at No. 5. Florida Tech, Tampa, Saint Leo and Barry round out the top 10.
The regional rankings determine which teams qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Conference champions from the GSC, SSC and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) receive and automatic bid, followed by the next five highest-ranking teams. The top two seeds in each region host a four-team double-elimination regional tournament. The winners of each regional play a best-of-three series on the campus of the highest remaining seed.
Future region polls are set to be released on April 22 and April 29, with the final NCAA Division II selection show scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday, May 4.
