Charters in Athens

Athens City Schools is the only North Alabama school district that has spoken publicly about opening a charter school.

The school board has given Superintendent Trey Holladay the ability to pursue becoming a charter school authorizer.

However, Holladay says the district is waiting for the Alabama Department of Education to roll out the rules surrounding the creation of charter schools.

The state has 60 days to put together the application process and school systems then have 60 days to submit a proposal.
