GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - One woman was taken to the hospital and one person was charged with DUI after an SUV crashed into an Applebee's restaurant in Guntersville on Thursday afternoon.

It started with a wreck on Highway 431 near the Cracker Barrel. An apparent intoxicated driver left the scene, but hit three other cars in or near the Applebee's parking lot before crashing into the restaurant.

One person inside the restaurant was taken to the hospital. The suspect ran away but was later arrested.

Fire crews checked for possible injuries both inside the vehicle and inside the restaurant.

"We had to take the hood off," said Guntersville Fire Chief Jeffrey Tongate. "We had to cut the battery cables. There was nobody inside the vehicle. We went inside and we did have one young female, it was her first day as an employee here at Applebee's. She sustained some injuries to her head."

The woman's condition is unknown but authorities say her injuries weren't life threatening.
