MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Alabama Senator Richard Shelby took a tour of Morgan County industry Saturday.
He stopped by the 3M plant to take a tour of the facility and get to know its workers.
Shelby said it is important to learn about local industry so he can find out how to help and not hurt them.
"At the end of the day it's about creating jobs and opportunities for people, the American people and competing in the world," Shelby said. "This is an example of where they are doing it."
Friday, the Senate approved a blueprint budget plan for the country.
The plan has a conservative vision and shrinks the federal deficit by more than $5 trillion over the next 10 years, mostly by cutting health care and other benefit programs.
Shelby said this progress is a good sign that the Republican-controlled Senate is doing its job.
"We have got to bring spending in line," he said. "This is a good first step."
The legislation is a non-binding blueprint that does not require President Obama's signature, but which lays the groundwork for future bills that seem destined for veto fights with the president.
