ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

A group of ladies hope to offer the Veterans Museum in Athens a new tribute to those who serve our country.

These ladies are volunteering their time and efforts at the Alabama Veterans Museum in Athens. It's a place where patriotic memories are stored.

"We are continually receiving items every day and as you can see we're kind of packed to the gills so we need some more room," said director Sandra Thompson.

But in order to meet the need, it would cost about $1-million. That got board members like Marlene Isom into a fundraising mood. Marlene is also involved in quilt guilds.

Once the idea began to grow, Isom went antiquing and while she was in a store, she found a quilt from 1919.

"We go to Paducah Quilt Show, the big national quilt show every year and at the Rotary Club, they had antique quilts," said Marlene Isom. "And we spotted one that was done in 1919 that was very similar to this and it just touched my heart."

She says she brought the idea back to Athens and the board.

"I approached them with it and Sandy came up with threads of honor and it was born," Said Isom.

"All the money will go to our building expansion fund," Thompson said.

And now these ladies are weaving the fundraising idea together with the names of local patriots for a huge quilt which will hang at the museum.

"There are spots available for you to honor your veteran or active service member and it ranges from $500 down to $25 so there's 3,000 that are available on the quilt." Isom said.

"All veterans deserve to have a place where they can have their memories stored," said Thompson.

These ladies are continuing to stitch together patriotic memories of soldiers present and past so others can remember their names and service for all of us.
