ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

Several police officers and the police chief were called to an incident at the Athens Department of Human Resources building on West Market Street.

City officials said police received a call from a DHR employee just after 5 p.m. The employee reported hearing shots fired at the building. The building was quickly evacuated.

The City of Athens put out a tweet just after 5:30 p.m. saying that police secured the building and conducted a search of the rooms inside.

No evidence of gunshots were found by police and no injuries were reported.

"Any time you have a situation like this, you want your staff and your officers (to) check it adequately," said Police Chief Floyd Johnson. "What we did in this case was start at the bottom. We check every room going to the top. Then we came back down from the top - checking every room to the bottom."

The Limestone County Sheriff's Office and Alabama state troopers assisted with securing the building.
