Arsenal: Munitions disposal shook Huntsville, surrounding areas

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Redstone Arsenal official confirmed that ordnance blasts were behind the loud "booming" noises felt in Huntsville and surrounding areas Wednesday evening.

Multiple reports of loud noises came in just after 6 p.m., with locations varying around Madison County and surrounding areas, but centralized within the South Huntsville area.

There were also reports of damage by some residents and businesses in Huntsville. Windows shattered at the Goody's clothing store off Memorial Parkway.

Christopher Colster with Redstone Arsenal confirmed there was a planned destruction of old munitions that was set to begin at 6 p.m.

The blasts were strong enough to register on seismographs in the area.

According to the Team Redstone website, if you would like to file a claim regarding damage, you should contact the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate (Claims) on Honest John Road, Building 3439. Click here for more information.

    A fire at a storage unit has traffic on Hwy. 53 down to one lane.  The fire broke out just before noon Friday, with departments from Harvest, Toney and Bobo all responding.  Smoke from the Stor-it storage facility in Toney was visible from 10 miles away.
