VINA, AL (WAFF) - A Vina High School teacher accused of having sex with a student pleaded to second degree assault on Friday.
Second degree assault is a felony, but Brian Keeton will not have to register as a sex offender.
Keeton pleaded guilty to the lesser charge and signed an irrevocable revocation of his teaching certificate, which means he will never be able to teach again.
He received a four-year suspended sentence to three years of supervised probation.
Franklin County District Attorney Joey Rushing said they did not get everything they wanted in the case, but a felony charge and knowing Keeton will never teach again is enough for the victim and her family.
The victim did not want to testify in the trial setting, and her family worked to settle the case with the District Attorney, which DA Rushing took into consideration.
