MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - One man is dead after a domestic dispute at a Madison home Tuesday night.
It happened around 6 p.m. on Hunington Chase Drive, a cul-de-sac style street north of Mill Road and close to James Clemens High School.
Police said the man arrived at the home of his estranged wife earlier in the day Tuesday, violating a restraining order. The woman called police, telling them she believed he took a shotgun from the home.
When officers arrived at the scene, they said the man drove past them, and they attempted to follow. Shortly afterward, investigators said they heard a single gunshot, and officers also fired shots.
They found the man in his vehicle with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner stated that the body was not removed from the scene until 2:30 a.m.
The coroner added that while the official report is not complete, it appears that the man only had the one, self-inflicted wound.
Captain John Stringer with Madison police said two officers are on paid administrative leave, pending the results of an investigation into the incident.
"You've got to remember that an officer-involved shooting is a very traumatic event," said Capt. Stringer. "We want to make sure the officers are taking care of and that we give them whatever appropriate leave they need. There will obviously be a policy review, and we're following all department policies."
Officials said more details about the incident will be provided after family members have been contacted and the case is turned over to the appropriate investigative authority.
