UNA rolls to big win over Valdosta State

Nathan Spehr and Brandon Herman combined for 41 points as the University of North Alabama men's basketball team won its second straight Gulf South Conference road game with a 95-79 triumph at Valdosta State on Saturday. Two days after knocking off host West Florida, the Lions extended their winning streak against VSU to 10 consecutive games to improve to 8-11 overall and 5-8 in GSC play.

Spehr, who reached 1,000 career points against West Florida, led all scorers with 21 points and five assists after going 4-for-4 from the free throw line and 3-for-3 from three-point range. The senior also improved his career record to 9-0 against the Blazers.

North Alabama dominated the glass throughout the game, pulling down a 48-33 rebounding advantage. The Lions grabbed 20 offensive boards leading to 29 second-chance points. UNA also held a commanding 50-20 advantage in points in the paint.

UNA took control with an early 30-10 run. Six different players scored for the Lions during the spurt while VSU went 6:48 without a field goal. A dunk by Jere Vucica made the score 30-10 with 9:09 remaining in the first half. North Alabama took a 47-29 lead into the half.

Valdosta State would get no closer than 14 points over the final 20 minutes of play.

Herman reached the 20-point plateau for a team-high fifth time this season. For the second straight game Calvin Dade (16 points, 14 rebounds) and Marcus Landry (12 points, 13 rebounds) notched double-doubles for the Lions. Vucica rounded out the top scorers with 12 points on the night.

James Spencer and Blake Justice led VSU (9-10 overall, 4-9 GSC) with 15 points each.

UNA will return home for its next four GSC games. The Lions will take on West Alabama on Jan. 29, with tip-off set for 8 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
