BIRMINGHAM | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team was picked to finish second and five players were honored as Preseason All-Gulf South Conference selections, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
UAH's five all-conference choices marked a league high.
The five helped UAH earn the No. 1 seed in the GSC tournament last season along with the top seed at the NCAA South Regional and a berth in the NCAA South Super Regional.
Valdosta State was picked to finish first as the Lady Blazers totaled 77 points in the poll, while UAH garnered a pair of first-place votes to finish in second in the preseason rankings with 71 points, just ahead of Shorter's 70 points. Rounding out the top five were North Alabama and West Florida.
Delta State was chosen to finish sixth in the conference, and West Alabama and West Georgia were tabbed in seventh and eighth, respectively. Union was in ninth, with Christian Brothers rounding out the poll in 10th.
The league also recognized its top newcomers, and UAH was represented by Michal Robertson and Abby Roberts. Robertson is a senior who is playing her last season of eligibility after transferring from West Alabama, while Roberts comes to Huntsville after two years at East Mississippi Community College.
UAH will start the new campaign on Feb. 6, taking on Ferris State and Bellarmine on the first day of the 2015 Charger Chillout at the Kiwanis Sportsplex in Huntsville.
