BOAZ, AL (WAFF) - The Boaz Fire Department has confirmed one person has died from a house fire on the 500 block of Arrington Drive.
Authorities received the call at around 4:52 a.m. and responded shortly after. Smoke and flames were visible when emergency crews arrived.
The family identified the victim as 88-year-old Millard Arrington.
Family members said they think some embers fell out of the fire place, which caught the house on fire.
The family said Arrington went down to actually check on the fire at two this morning, but that he must not have properly shut the screen to fire place.
"The house was engulfed in flames." said Gerald Arrington, Millard's son. "Grandson and his friend were staying upstairs they jumped off the roof and ran in the front door and tried to get my mom and dad out. Got mom out and dad went back to get some things and did not make it out."
This isn't the first time the Arrington family has been affected by a fire.
Back in July 2012 the Arrington jewelry business caught fire and was completely destroyed.
Fire officials are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
There were three other people at the home at the time of the fire. They got out uninjured.
No further information is available at this time as the fire is still under investigation.
