MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

A family was held at gunpoint and robbed in the wee hours of Wednesday morning at a home on Portal Lane in Madison.

Three masked men got through a back door - and a young girl's quick thinking may have saved her family.

A 911 call came in from inside the home: on the line, a young girl begging for help that three men were in the home.

Meanwhile, her father and mother were being attacked and tied up.

The father broke into tears as he told us what happened, and said it was the longest 12 minutes of his life, but could not face a camera.

Just before 3 a.m. Wednesday, he fell asleep on the couch and woke up to a gun in his face and three men with masks in his home.

They then proceeded to tie him up. They then went to the bedroom and tied up his wife and punched her in the face.

He told the men to take whatever they wanted.

Meanwhile, this is all happening with his two young children in the other room.

One did grab a cell phone and called 911.

While the men were occupied, the mother broke free and ran out of the home to a neighbor's house, who also called 911.

"This is the first time I've heard of somebody blatantly going into a home that's occupied and that's kind of bold," said neighbor Teresa Walker. "I don't know if they broke in or if the door was unlocked, but that was [a] pretty bold, surprising thing to do."

One those men was injured; the father managed to get free and grab a kitchen knife and cut one of the offenders.

We know the men were able to get away with some electronics and money.

No arrests have been made; the investigation is ongoing.

David: Showers and storms ongoing across the Valley

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
