The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team lost the series finale 4-0 to WCHA rival Bemidji State on Saturday night at Sanford Center. UAH is now 5-16-3 (4-12-0 WCHA), while BSU improves to 7-10-3 (5-6-3 WCHA).
Matt Larose made the start in goal on Saturday night, posting 29 saves in 60 minutes of play. The Nanaimo, British Columbia native's record dropped to 0-7-1 with the loss.
The majority of the first frame was quiet on the scoring end, including one power-play opportunity apiece from the Chargers and Beavers. However, Bemidji State broke through the scoreless tie with a goal by Kyle Bauman, his second of the series, with 1:41 left until the first intermission.
Following the break, Bemidji State added two more goals in the second period as John Parker had an unassisted tally at 4:10 in the frame and Ruslan Pedan made it 3-0 BSU with a marker at 13:31. The Beavers took the 3-0 advantage into the intermission period.
Both teams went scoreless for the first half of the third period, but Pedan made it 4-0 BSU with his second goal of the day at the 14:49 mark of the final frame. The Chargers were able to keep the Beavers scoreless on the power play, despite incurring the loss on Saturday.
Larose posted 11 saves in the third period to bring him to 29 total stops on the night. This was the first game in eight starts this season that the sophomore has not recorded 30 or more saves.
The Chargers return home next weekend to take on WCHA opponent Northern Michigan on Jan. 16-17 at the Von Braun Center with a 7 p.m. puck drop on both nights. The fifth trading card set is Friday's featured giveaway, while the first 500 fans in attendance to Saturday's game will receive pucks with an official UAH logo.
