MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Emergency crews were called to the scene of a house fire in Madison County.
It happened just before 4 p.m. Wednesday at a home on Pops Corner Road, north of Ryland Pike.
A neighbor saw flames from around a chimney and knocked on the front door to alert anyone who might have been inside.
Efforts to battle the blaze were hindered by a hydrant that proved difficult to open, as well as winds which swept the flames across the roof.
By 5 p.m., crews had the upper-hand over the fire, but damage to the home was extensive.
A cause of the fire is still under investigation.
