MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) -

Alabama governor Robert Bentley announced that the Standard & Poor's rating service gave the state its highest rating for highway bonds.

The Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (ATRIP) launched in 2012 to improve roads and bridges across the state.

More than $500 million in bonds were issued for the work.

The high S&P rating means the state will save up to $40 million in future interest payments, according to the governor.
