BIRMINGHAM , AL (WAFF) - Students protested in Birmingham over the decision to shut down the University of Alabama Birmingham football program. 

The hashtag “FreeUAB” and “SaveUAB” began trending internationally Monday.

Bob Jones High School, Grissom High School, Sparkman High School, Decatur High School and Athens High School all have former football players on the UAB football roster.

WAFF 48 looked into how the UAB Football Program finances compare to another Alabama schools of a similar size and also Division 1 school, Troy University. This data is according to the U.S. Department of Education. Click here for larger chart.

Football expenses of Troy vs. UAB

UAB announced on Tuesday that the football program will be shut down.

According to USA Today, UAB's subsidy is $18,070,530 or 64.17 percent. UAB's NCAA finances rank is 83. 125 schools have athletic programs subsidized at a higher percentage.

Troy is ranked 120, with a subsidy of $12,857,258 or 65.92 percent.
