UNA with 13 student athletes named to the All-GSC teams

The University of North Alabama placed a league-high 13 players on the 2014 All-Gulf South Conference football squad, with seven first-team selections and six second-team picks.

The 13 honorees helped lead the Lions to a 9-1 record and a share of the Gulf South Conference Championship this season. UNA hosts Valdosta State Saturday at noon at Braly Stadium in a first round NCAA Division II Playoff Game.

UNA players selected first-team All-GSC are junior running back Lamonte Thompson of Florence, Ala., junior wide receiver Delvon Carpenter of Houston, Texas, senior offensive tackle Keith Jones of Birmingham, Ala., senior defensive tackle Taylor Carney of Killen, Ala., senior linebacker Steven Rich of Savannah, Tenn., sophomore defensive back Philbert Martial of Mobile, Ala., and senior place kicker Taylor Pontius of Biloxi, Miss.

UNA's second-team All-GSC picks are junior quarterback Luke Wingo of Tuscaloosa, Ala., junior wide receiver Lee Mayhall of Jackson, Tenn., senior defensive lineman Shaquille Smith of Jackson, Miss., sophomore defensive back Levi Fell of Muscle Shoals, Ala., and freshman long-snapper Wil Lovelace of Florence, Ala. In addition his first-team selection as a defensive back, Martial was also selected second-team All-GSC as a return specialist.

Thompson earned All-GSC honors for a third straight season after being a second-team pick in 2012 and 2013. This season he has rushed for 818 yards and 11 touchdowns and averages 5.0 yards per carry. He now ranks as the seventh leading rusher in UNA history with 2,301 career yards.

Carpenter ranks as UNA's leading receiver with 35 catches for 697 yards and six touchdowns. He has had four games this season with over 100-receiving yards.

Jones earned All-GSC honors for a second straight year after being a second-team pick in 2013.

Carney has 21 tackles this season with 7.5 tackles for loss, three quarterback sacks, one pass interception and two pass break-ups. He was a also a first-team All-GSC pick in 2013.

Rich is UNA's leading tackler with 81 total stops this season. He has also picked off two passes and recovered one fumble.

Martial has made 37 tackles this season with two tackles for loss, three interceptions that he has returned for 136 yards, and seven pass break-ups. He has also added 174 yards on 17 punt returns for a 10.2 average, and 199 yards on kickoff returns for a 19.9 average.

Pontius is UNA's leading scorer with 72 points. He has converted on 42 of 44 extra-point attempts and 10-of-13 field goal attempts. He has also recorded 33 touchbacks on 63 kickoffs and hit a school-record 54-yard field goal on the final play of the game against Valdosta State to give UNA a 31-29 win over the Blazers.

Wingo has thrown for 1,780 yards this season, completing 131 of 201 passes for a 65.2 completion percentage. He has thrown for 11 touchdowns and rushed for five more.

Mayhall, who is out for the season with an injury, caught 25 passes in nine games for 287 yards and an 11.5-yard average per catch. He previously earned Capital One Academic All-District honors as well.

Smith has made 15 tackles this season with two tackles for loss of four yards.

Fell has 33 tackles with two tackles for loss of six yards and five pass break-ups.

Lovelace has handled every snap for the Lions this season on punts, field goals and extra-points as a true freshman.
