FORT PAYNE, AL (WAFF) - Fort Payne police identified the suspect and the victim in a weekend murder.
Investigators said 45-year-old Bernie Wayne Clark was murdered at Hardaman Trailer Park on South Gault Avenue on Saturday.
Police arrested 42-year-old David Paul Edward Wooten. He was charged with murder and his bond was set at $250,000.
Investigators have not released the cause of death. Clark's body will undergo an autopsy to determine how he died. However, a copy of the complaint states that a machete was used.
It was learned that the victim and the suspect live just across the road from one another. It is not yet known what prompted the murder, but one neighbor says he's not surprised.
Jeff Harrison is a next door neighbor. Harrison said Wooten was a heavy drinker, and asked him on occasion to take him to get alcohol.
Harrison added Wooten also had other issues.
"He has told me before that he has heard voices and stuff," Harrison said. "And I've heard him banging around over there, you know maybe violent outbursts or whatever. Then one other time I smoked a cigarette out here, I saw him hollering at some imaginary guy."
Wooten remains in the DeKalb County Jail.
