HARTSELLE, AL (WAFF) - A pedestrian was killed after a Hartselle police officer hit him with a patrol car.

The Hartselle officer, Lieutenant James Holladay, was traveling south on Sparkman Street, north of Hickory Street, when he struck 71-year-old William Elbert Anderson of Cullman as he crossed the street in front of him.

The crash happened around 4:50 p.m. Wednesday while the officer was on a routine patrol.

Anderson was taken to Decatur Morgan Hospital and then transferred to Huntsville Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Friends of Anderson called him "Big Bill." They said he had a big heart and would take the shirt off his back to help anyone. They said he had recently been caring for his 90-year-old mother.

A man who knew Anderson for 15 years said "Big Bill" was loved by everyone who knew him.

"I want people to know that Bill Anderson was one of the best friends I ever had," said Arthur Massey. "He was a good man. He's going to be missed a lot, too."

The Hartselle police chief said Lieutenant Holladay is being given as much time as he needs before returning to work, but he will not be placed on mandatory leave as state officials continue their investigation.
