Both inbound and outbound lanes of Redstone Arsenal's Gate 7 were reopened Thursday evening after crews cleared a hazardous device that was discovered along Martin Road earlier in the day.

Road construction workers discovered the item Thursday morning. The item was unearthed by an explosive ordnance disposal team from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and safely destroyed, according to Arsenal officials. No one was injured in the process.

"We act with an abundance of caution whenever this happens as the safety of our workforce is our number one priority," said Col. Bill Marks, Garrison Commander. "As we move forward with the Martin Road expansion project, it's possible that we'll find more of these items because of Redstone Arsenal's history as a munitions manufacturing and testing installation."

This is the second time the gate has been closed because of an unexploded ordnance found in the area. The gate was closed for the majority of the day on Sept. 23 before being reopened that afternoon.

That object turned out to be a World War II era rocket.
