OWENS CROSS ROADS, AL (WAFF) - Multiple crews, including a hazardous materials team, were called to the scene of what officials called a death investigation in Owens Cross Roads.

It happened around 7 p.m. at a home on Brockway Road. Madison County Sheriff's deputies, HEMSI, and Owens Cross Roads Fire initially responded to the scene.

Officials at the scene said neighbors went to check on the welfare of the man who lives at the residence, after having gone several days without contact. The neighbors found the man dead on his bedroom floor, and called 911.

"The neighbors were distraught," said Sergeant Tim Whisante. "This is someone they've lived next door to and looked after, and to find him deceased in his home is pretty bothersome. They have been very helpful."

A hazmat team was briefly called to the scene during the initial stages of the investigation Sunday night due to the presence of a heavy odor.

Investigators are still working to determine what led to the man's death.
