TRINITY, AL (WAFF) -

A man is dead and his wife in the hospital, after a child called police saying her father shot her mother, then turned the gun on himself.

The shooting happened at a home along Old Trinity Road in Trinity.

Police are calling this an attempted murder-suicide because the father, Adrian Wray, is dead, but his wife Angela is in the hospital receiving care after suffering a single gunshot wound. They said the couple had been in an argument before the shooting.

Decatur and Trinity Police responded to the shooting after 8 a.m. Sunday. Two children were at the home at the time, one of whom officials said called 911. Officials said one of the children witnessed Adrian shoot Angela with a 9-mm weapon before turning the gun on himself.

Police said they had only been called to the residence once before for a medical emergency. Freda and Mario Campbell have been helping take care of Adrian since he suffered an aneurysm and was confined to a wheelchair.

"I don't believe this," Mario said. "I'm here everyday like clockwork. I am emotional as hell right now."

"Nobody saw it coming it all," added Freda. The caretakers checked on the children Sunday after the shooting, and said they were visibly shaken.

Officials said Angela was responsive and asking about the well-being of her kids when they arrived. She was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital and underwent surgery. A family member said Sunday night Angela is currently in a medically-induced coma.

"She was coherent, she was talking to us," said Trinity Police Chief Chris McLemore. "She was more upset about her children and we told her we would take care of the kids."

This investigation is ongoing. The two children are currently in the care of relatives.
