FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama volleyball team got off to a good start in Gulf South Conference play with a 3-0 win over Christian Brothers in front of 568 fans Tuesday evening at Flowers Hall. The Lions were balanced on offense and defense while CBU was held to a .027 hitting percentage in the 25-23, 25-10, 25-19 victory.
Megan Gorey had 10 kills while Andrea De Leon turned in a double-double with 28 assists and 11 digs as UNA improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in league action.
In the opening set, the Lions raced out to an 11-3 lead before holding on for the two-point victory. Five different players had at least two kills in the game. The first set would prove to be the closest contest as the Buccaneers had a negative team hitting percentage (-.032) over the final two frames.
Four different UNA players recorded double-digit dig totals as CBU had trouble putting the ball away. Ashtyn Kapovich and Joanna Calhound had 14 digs each while Shantel Federick added 10 digs on the night. Offensively, Natasha Fomina finished with nine kills with Peyton Lang close behind at eight. Megan Wadsworth also added four kills and three blocks to go along with her .429 hitting percentage.
UNA will play its next two GSC matches at Flowers Hall. The Lions will take on Shorter Thursday at 6 p.m. before hosting Mississippi College the following evening at 7 p.m.
