SCOTTSBORO, AL (WAFF) -

The Jackson County Commission will discuss cutting down a 150-year-old maple tree from the courthouse square on Tuesday.

That particular tree is last of three maple trees which stood on the property.

But now a tree specialist wants to lend a hand to help save it. He believes there is a good possibility the tree can be saved and willing to determine that absolutely free to the county.

The maple tree on the courthouse square in Scottsboro has gotten the attention of Dr. Olaf Ribeiro, a certified arborist and plant pathologist living in the state of Washington.

Dr. Ribeiro said most tree problems can be controlled and claims to have saved trees more than 500 years old using the appropriate biological treatments.

Ribeiro said he is willing to analyze samples from the tree to determine what's wrong - at no charge.

"If you take out a tree of that age, the next few generations have lost out," Dr. Ribeiro said. "They are not going to see a tree of that size again, so we do everything possible to give future generations, especially the young children, a chance to grow up with a beautiful tree."

Dr. Ribeiro said tests could be done within a week after he receives the tree samples.

Commission Chairman Matthew Hodges said he is interested in what the doctor has to propose, but says safety remains the top concern.
