IDER, AL (WAFF) -

DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris reported a body was found in a wooded area near Ider on Sunday at approximately 4:00 p.m. The body appears to be that of a missing man, but confirmation will be determined by forensics experts.

The body was discovered by horseback riders approximately 300 yards in a wooded area off Sugargum Road, after the Ider police chief asked them for assistance. Wet weather had made finding the body difficult.

Investigators from the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and stated processing it for evidence.

The body was removed on Monday morning and sent to the Alabama Department of Forensics in Huntsville. Investigators from the Center for Applied Forensics assisted in processing the scene and removal of the body.

The sheriff said it is too soon to say whether or not foul play can be ruled out. He said the body was in a state of decomposition.

"We had people working all night on this case," said Sheriff Harris. "I hope we can get a positive ID soon and follow up on some leads developed so far."

This is an ongoing investigation and information will be released as it is available.
