HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - This week the city council pledged more than 12-thousand-dollars for the Harris Home for Children as it struggles with cuts in funding from the state.

But friends and supporters say the kids need much more.

Antonio McGinnis director of Huntsville's Harris Home foster home said the organization has been struggling on reserves since its support from the state was cut almost 85 percent.

"Right now we're an organization that's been bleeding because of these cuts." said McGinnis.

Informal supporters like retired Army pilot Herb Hayes have been bringing supplies they could and sometimes arranging for help with problems like its leaky roof.

He wishes he could excite support like the ALS ice bucket challenges get.

"One of my best buddies passed away from ALS, so I'm all in favor of it. But our local kids need to get some support and help.", said Hayes.

"Children are coming into care every single day and the needs are continuing to grow so we need support , not only from the city council but support from everybody throughout the city." ,said McGinnis.

Harris Home supporters will be teeing up at the Harris Home inaugural golf tournament benefit on Sep. 29.
