LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Mayor Greg Fischer on Thursday joined family members of a murdered Louisville toddler to offer condolences and plead for an arrest.

Family members and neighbors cried and prayed after the Wednesday shooting death of Neriah “NeNe” Miller, who was 16 months old when someone gunned her down on her front porch. Her mother, 21-year-old Sherrie Miller, was injured in the shooting and remains hospitalized.

Metro Police have no suspects in the shooting, which happened around 6 p.m. Wednesday, and detectives watched Thursday evening as people gathered at the shooting scene on 37th Street near Market.

"Whoever did this, they will be brought to justice," said Tijuana Twyman, the grandmother of the murdered toddler. "These people don't know how callous it was to shoot a baby."

Fischer hugged family members and met with them near the scene before addressing a crowd gathered in front of the family's home.

The mayor joined Metro Police in asking the person or people responsible for the shooting to turn themselves in.

"The biggest crime of all, the biggest sin of all, would be for this to happen and our community not to come together and say to these thugs on the street, 'That's enough,'" Fischer said, his voice rising.

Police detectives used a metal detector to look for bullet casings in the yard next to the victims' home. They planned to do additional work once the peace rally ended.

Sherrie Miller is recovering from her injuries but remains hospitalized, Twyman said.

The "Man-Up" organization has scheduled another rally for 7 p.m. Friday at King Solomon Baptist Church, 1620 Anderson Street.
