Henrico Schools give meals tax projects 'OK'

Thursday night, Henrico County's School Board officially approved its first plans to use Meals Tax funding. The tax is expected to collect millions, with money going to Henrico Schools.

The initial expenditures will go toward designs for 11 school bathroom upgrades, six kitchen upgrades, and renovations to Tuckahoe Elementary School's fifth grade wing. The cost comes to roughly $500,000.

"We made a commitment to the public that when these funds are spent, we are going to demonstrate exactly how these funds are spent," said Andy Jenks, a spokesperson for the school system.

It's a decision that's sitting well with some of the folks, footing the bill.

"I think it's important for them to let us know where that money is going," said tax payer Allison Bond. "Especially if you're asking tax payers to contribute. I want to know where my money's going."

The project designs are underway. Expect some completed work by the summer of 2015.
