MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Seven protesters were arrested Thursday night after refusing to leave the Alabama State Capitol building after it closed, according to Anna Morris, a spokesperson for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Morris said officers made numerous requests for the protesters to leave the building. The building closes at 5 p.m. daily.

Alecha Suzette Irby of Selma, Fred L. Hammond of Northport, Kenneth C. Glasgow of Dothan, Annie Avery of Birmingham, Augustus Townes Jr. of Montgomery, John S. Zippert of Eutaw and Faya Rose Toure of Montgomery were arrested and charged with criminal trespass second degree. They were transported to the Montgomery County Detention Facility.

State Sen. Hank Sanders (D-Selma) said in a statement earlier in the evening that the group of Alabama residents didn't intent to leave the Capitol building.

"This is an act of faith in support of Medicaid expansion," Sanders' office said, calling it a "peaceful demonstration."

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley has steadfastly refused to expand Medicaid, calling it a broken system.
