TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The father of a 2-year old child, found lying in his driveway with head injuries, is speaking out and asking the community for help.

David Perez Alvarez, 2, was found by a neighbor in the 3300 block of E. Behan Street on Tuesday morning.

Pima County Sheriff's officials said evidence at the scene indicated the boy was most likely hit by a car. By Wednesday morning, relatives from all over California had arrived in Tucson and were at the Diamond Children's hospital to support the family and pray for the child.

Marco Perez said his son David Perez Alvarez was conscious and responding by moving his hands and legs, but he was still in critical condition.

Perez said his sun suffered at least four skull fractures, and they were waiting to hear what type of lasting injuries could result from these injuries.

Perez, who spoke broken English spoke exclusively to Tucson News Now on Wednesday afternoon.

"I just need to know what happened. Why he or she left my son on the floor, on the ground, he left. I don't know why. I just need to know. He's a baby, a human being, you know," said Perez.

He questioned whether the person who may have hit his son and fled had any children or family of their own.

"If somebody knows something about that, please call the police. We need to know," pleaded Perez.

Pima county detectives have been working around the clock to try and solve this case. Deputy Tom Peine, a spokesman for the department said the Traffic Unit was leading the investigation, but they were not ruling out any possibilities and had detectives from other units on the case as well.

"What we found is his injuries are consistent with the child being hit by a vehicle," said Peine.

Investigators had examined all of the vehicles in the parking lot and neighborhood where the child lived to look for tell tale signs that they might be involved in such a crash, but so far, no breakthrough.

Perez said he left his house at about 6:50 a.m. on Tuesday morning to go to work.

"I put him to bed right before everything happened. He knows how to open the door, so I think my wife didn't know. It was just a one minute kind of thing. I don't know what my wife was doing. I gave him a cell phone to play with, but I don't know what happened," said Perez.

A neighbor taking his children to school found the child bleeding in the driveway at around 7:45 a.m. that morning, and called 911.

"The injuries the child suffered are crushing injuries," said Deputy Peine.

We asked Perez how the child was doing.

"He don't talk yet but he understands me. When I talk to him, move your hands, legs, you know," said Perez.

Sheriff's officials are reaching out to the public for help. Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
