FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

The American Cancer Society's Florence Office will close their doors at the end of the week. Despite the announcement, staff and volunteers said they are still working and serving the community.

They say the decision is a matter of money - but it's not because they don't have any.

Officials said closing the remote office is a way to better manage the money they receive from donors, keeping true to their main focus on finding a cure for cancer.

The 'For Rent' sign already hangs in the window on South Poplar Street, but just because there will be no formal office doesn't mean staff and volunteers won't be working in the community.

In fact, leaders said they feel it will help them better serve the community - allowing them to be more mobile when it comes to offering support and guidance as well other community programs.

The Florence office only has one full-time staff member, who is now retiring. The rest of the staff already travel across northwest Alabama, meeting with volunteers on a weekly and monthly basis.

"It's not necessarily that we don't have the funds, it's that we're trying to be more efficient and good stewards of the finds that we have," said Senior Manager Kevin Sims. "We know our volunteers are out there working their tails off raising money to try and find a cure for cancer. We want to use that money to find a cure for cancer to fund our mission, and that's what we're trying to be good stewards and do more of."
