The chefs of tomorrow are getting an early education thanks to a new culinary class being offered in one Madison County school.

Students at Hazel Green High School cut the ribbon on a brand new industrial kitchen classroom for their new Culinary Academy Tuesday morning.

This isn't just for home-ec classes though. The goal is to give students a head start in the world of hospitality and management. The kitchen features everything from convection ovens to steamers, fryers and industrial freezers.

The program currently offers two courses, which are Intro to Hospitality and Culinary Arts 1.

Students are learning what's it's like to work in a restaurant from cooking to catering and everything in between.

"We've got kids that actually want to go out into the culinary profession and we're giving them the basic skills that they need for that," said culinary instructor Caitlin White. "And there's those who are just gaining life skills, you know everyone needs to be able to feed themselves and cook. And a lot of times when you get out on your own, you kind of realize that's a skill you didn't know you were lacking, so we can help them with both capacities here."

Hazel Green is the only school in the county and the second in the greater-Huntsville area to house a culinary program.

Most students have to travel to a career tech center to enroll in these types of classes.
