HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A yacht with a notable past is irreparably damaged after attempts to pull the foundering craft out of the water.

The yacht, named 'Notorious' but originally christened 'Serano II' in the 1950s, began sinking late last week at Ditto Landing. A crew was called in to lift the sinking hull from the water over the weekend, but hopes to salvage the yacht appear dashed.

With past owners such as President Gerald Ford and movie star Charlton Heston, the current owner of the 'Notorious' was in the process of restoring the yacht. Now, the boat remains beached at Ditto Landing, with large sections of the yacht's stern exposed and broken. It will remain there until plans to dispose of it are devised.

A Ditto Landing representative said there is still no determination of what caused the leak that began the sinking in the first place.
