SELMA, Ala. (AP) - A judge has appointed lawyers to represent a Dallas County couple charged with rape in an alleged scheme to have a baby.
The Dallas County judge approved taxpayer-funded legal representation for 29-year-old Jeremy Swann and his 28-year-old wife Amanda Swann during a hearing Monday afternoon.
Authorities contend the man repeatedly had sex with an underage girl recently in hopes she would get pregnant and give them the baby.
Court documents say Amanda Swann described the plan for police and told an investigator she watched the assaults.
The man's mother is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Authorities say she knew what was happening and did nothing to help the child.
The three have yet to enter a plea. A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 9.
