HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A man is in critical condition in Huntsville Hospital after he took Huntsville police on a chase.

Police tried to stop a black Hyundai Sonata car around 10:45 p.m. Sunday night for an equipment violation on Research Park Blvd. and Dan Tibbs Road.

Police said they've been trying to stop this car for the past two weeks, but it got away from them each time.

The driver didn't stop, so police set up spike strips.

The car ran over the strips and lost two tires.

The driver, Chaunce Martel Williams, 28, continued on Old Madison Pike, went through a construction road block, and crashed.

The chase ended there. There were three people in the car.

Williams was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and is now in critical condition. The two passengers, Xzenia Allen, 21, and Jeremy Briggs, 29, also went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Huntsville Fire Department and Rescue Squad helped get the people out of the car and construction area.

This was not a high speed chase. Speeds didn't go above the speed limit.

None of the officers' vehicles were involved in the accident.

Police also said the driver has two felony warrants.

Charges are pending against the driver. The investigation is ongoing.
