Huntsville City School Board tries to be frugal as they plan for next year's budget

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville city school leaders are trying to be frugal as they plan the budget for next year.

The Chief Financial Officer for the school district says a major burden they're dealing with this year was a rise in insurance premiums for employees.

A nine percent increase in rates and normal step raise for employees equated to about 2 million dollars.

Things like extending STEM programs...about a 350,000-dollar cost.

800,000-dollars will go to strengthening and adding pre-k programs.

The district also hired a Magnet program director and will enhance those programs to the tune of about 350,000-dollars.
