ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

Athens Police are investigating several recent crimes committed in business parking lots with thousands of dollars worth of equipment stolen. Two car break-ins were reported in the same night, and police logged another incident in which the crook or crooks hitched a flatbed trailer to a vehicle and took off with it.

Investigators believe two of the crimes are connected because of methods, locations, and the timing of the vehicle break-ins. They think another thief may have committed the third.

At the Best Western on US 72, sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, someone smashed the rear windows of a vehicle. They stole three air compressors, four Skilsaws, and six air guns - roughly $6,000 worth of equipment taken.

During the same timeframe, about a half mile away in the Hampton Inn and Suites parking lot on Kelli Drive, a Nikon camera, three camera lenses and a data processor were stolen after the thief or thieves smashed a rear window.

Just 400 yards from there, at the McDonald's on 72 on Sunday, someone drove off with a $30,000 flatbed trailer.

Police said they think the McDoanld's heist may be the work of another crook, but they're not ruling out a connection. If you know anything about any of these crimes, call Athens police.
