AUTAUGA CO., AL (WSFA) -

The driver who attempted to elude Alabama State Troopers Thursday on Interstate 65 in Autauga County, and was eventually caught, is now charged with numerous crimes and is being held in the Elmore County jail.

Nelson Bell,19, of West Palm Beach, FL is charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, shooting into an occupied vehicle, burglary, two counts of receiving stolen property, and several traffic offenses.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation and other law enforcement agencies in Alabama and Florida are working to determine the extent of Bell's criminal activity. Additional charges may follow.

The situation started shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday, according to Alabama State Trooper Sgt. Steve Jarrett, when a state trooper attempted to pull over a vehicle doing 91 mph near the 184 mile marker. That's just south of the Pine Level exit of I-65 near the Autauga/Chilton county line.

Bell, the driver of the red Toyota SUV, fled the scene in what was ultimately confirmed to be a stolen vehicle. Sgt. Jarrett says while in pursuit of the vehicle, the trooper was fired upon by the fleeing suspect, though no one was injured from the shooting.

Jarrett says another responding state trooper successfully deployed spike-strips and the vehicle crashed into the tree line along I-65 in the northbound direction approximately 8 miles south of Clanton.

Bell fled the vehicle on foot but was apprehended a short time later. An Alabama State Trooper helicopter searched the area for a possible second suspect, but evidence now suggests that Bell was the vehicle's sole occupant at the time of the incident.

Sgt. Jarrett could not immediately say how fast the chase got, explaining that the investigation is ongoing and it's too early to tell. Shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday the stolen vehicle was removed from the scene.

Sgt. Jarrett says the Alabama Department of Public Safety also investigated a scene on Highway 14 in Millbrook that was a section of the police chase. That portion of roadway is where the suspect turned to go back to get on the interstate, Jarrett said.
