MUSCLE SHOALS, AL (WAFF) - Muscle Shoals police said that the gunman who opened fire at an apartment complex and injured a woman Wednesday is dead.

It happened at the Arbor Village Apartments off Firestone Avenue, near Second Street. Authorities said the shooting began around 11:30 a.m. One woman was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital. Officials on the scene confirmed the woman had been shot.

Family members identified the woman as Christy Gregory and said she was released from the hospital later that afternoon and recovering at home. They identified the shooter as her brother, Reagan Jones.

While crews treated her, the scene back at the apartments was anything short of intense.

Surrounding agencies showed up to assist Muscle Shoals police as officers evacuated residents from the complex.

Gunshots could be heard several times; witnesses said the shooter fired at police on more than one occasion. By 3 p.m., officials said, the standoff was over. Jones was found dead inside his apartment.

Gregory's husband said Jones had gone to a medical facility Wednesday morning in search of help, but said he was turned away, and given an appointment for September. He said Christy had gone to his apartment to try and help her brother.

"The family is terrified," said Heath Gregory. "I mean, the son is dead, and my wife is in the truck hurting - hurting for herself and for him."

Gregory said this situation could have been avoided, had Jones received help that morning.

One resident at the apartment complex said he knew Jones.

"I talked to him a couple times when I come home from work," said Cedric Pride. "We talked about sports and stuff like that. I never expected this from him."

Lt. Mark Goins with the Muscle Shoals Police Department said the assistance from surrounding agencies allows them to better respond to these types of situations.

"Anytime when you have something of this nature take place obviously being as close as we are in this area, each jurisdiction each agency has volunteered to come and assist," Goins said. "That's a great help to us. Being smaller agencies, we can always uses the assistance from other agencies so we definitely want to express our appreciation for everyone who has come and assisted today."

The Alabama Department of Public Safety has taken over the investigation of this case.
