ALABAMA (WAFF) -
Hundreds of unaccompanied illegal children have been released in Alabama in the past seven months, according to a report from the U.S. Office of the Administration of Children and Families.
Since January, over 60,000 unaccompanied children have crossed into the U.S. and have been apprehended by immigration authorities. Once that happens, children can then be placed with sponsors, which are typically family members.
Between January 1 and July 31, 515 unaccompanied illegal children were released in Alabama.
Border states, like California and Texas, have seen larger numbers.
In total, the report reveals that 37,744 have been released since the beginning of the year.
