BOAZ, AL (WAFF) - The fire chief of Boaz no longer holds that position.

Mike Sparks was terminated at Monday night's city council meeting. He had been on leave with pay for the last two weeks.

At the meeting, city officials said they were seeking Sparks' termination for "betrayal of trust." Officials claimed Sparks conducted the willful taping of conversations of parties without their knowledge during promotion hearings on July 22.

His attorney argued that three of the council members were witness to the recordings, that the personnel director knew he recorded previous meetings, and there was nothing on Sparks' record to suggest he should be immediately terminated.

Sparks had been the chief since early 2009. He was formerly a captain with the Albertville Fire Department before he accepted the chief's job.

Sparks started his career in the fire department in Albertville back in the early 1980's with only a brief time away.

The mayor would not comment following the meeting. Sparks' attorney said they are considering taking the matter to circuit court.

David: Showers and storms ongoing across the Valley

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
