Shots fired at officer during attempted traffic stop

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Someone fired shots at a veteran police officer late Sunday night. The officer was not harmed despite being close enough to see muzzle flashes, according to a Gwinnett County police.

The incident happened around 10:20 p.m. when a police officer witnessed a dark-colored sedan speeding in the Dawson Boulevard and Graves Road area.

The officer caught up with the car and turned on his blue lights during a traffic stop. Around this time the officer heard what he believed to be gunshots. A few minutes later he heard more popping noise and saw the muzzle flashes matching the sound. The car refused to pull over and the officer lost sight of it. Investigators later found shell casings at the location.

A few minutes later a separate Gwinnett County police officer pulled over a vehicle near the Sienna Heights Apartments on Graves Road. That driver was arrested on traffic charges. Police are investigating if this was the same vehicle that fired shots at the first officer.
