TUSCUMBIA, AL (WAFF) - Tuscumbia police arrested 28-year-old Michael Wade Logan on a capital murder charge for the death of his baby.

The 2-month-old infant was taken to the hospital unresponsive on Saturday where he later died.

Tuscumbia Police Chief Tony Logan said the child suffered multiple traumas to the head and body.

"The injuries were obviously not accidental," said Chief Logan at a news conference on Thursday afternoon.

Chief Logan said cases like this are the hardest to work.

The baby's mother, Denya Logan, was at work at the time of the incident, according to Chief Logan. Another child in the house, a 2-year-old, was placed in the custody of family members.

According to Chief Logan, a preliminary autopsy showed the infant may have suffered previous abuse. Denya Logan said despite that preliminary report, she doesn't think her husband killed their baby.

"There is not a bit of doubt in my heart or my gut," Denya said. "My husband, Michael Logan, did not do this. There's nothing that can make me believe that. I want to bury my son in peace, and that's all I got to say."

The baby was premature and stayed in the hospital for several weeks before going home with his parents. At the time of his death, Chief Logan estimated the baby boy weighed only seven pounds.

"It is of grave concern that parents take their child, especially a child that's in so much need... and don't take care of them to the point a child ends up dead," said Chief Logan. "That's tragic. It's tragic for our community, it's tragic for the innocent family members. There's nothing to describe how sickening it is when cities come across this."

Michael Logan is being held in the jail without bond. Investigators continue to look into the case.
