HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Less than 48 hours after Congressman Mo Brooks went on a radio show and shared his view that Democrats are waging a “war on whites," Tennessee Valley residents and groups are sharing their opinion of the comment. The remark has also ignited a firestorm on the internet.

On Wednesday, local leaders with the NAACP said they were appalled by the remark. NAACP’s Bernard Simelton said there is no war on whites in the United States and said the comment showed how out of touch Congressman Brooks is with his constitutions. However, the NAACP isn’t going to outright ask for Brooks to apologize.

“If within his heart he doesn't feel it's necessary to apologize, then that is on him and that's who he is. And that's what we need to know,” said Simelton. “Now, if he feels like he's made a mistake, certainly he should go be a man and apologize.”

Huntsville resident Augusta Bone reached out to WAFF after hearing the remark. She is now on what she’s called a “mission to get Brooks out of office” and is concerned over the damage the comment could have on the community.

“I don't know where his mind was,” said Bone. “He said he's a Christian. Christians don't act like that.”

But the Huntsville Tea Party Movement is throwing their support behind Congressman Brooks. The group released a statement Wednesday afternoon:

“The phrase "war on whites" is exaggeration. But it is no more of an exaggeration than the "war on women" that Democrats claim exists. The broader point made by Rep. Brooks is absolutely true. Democrats have a strategy based on racial conflict that they have followed for years. They appeal to people based on their skin color and try to separate citizens into two groups: victims and the privileged. Invariably white men are in the latter group, especially if they are old and southern. We reject the Democrats' malicious strategy and believe that all people should be judged by the "content of their character" with no regard for their pigmentation.”

We reached out to Congressman Brooks’ office multiple times on Wednesday. Neither the congressman nor his staff returned our messages, however on Tuesday, Brooks said he has no intention of retracting or apologizing for his statement.
