GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

After a four year break, the Tennessee Valley Authority has resumed its weed-control program on Lake Guntersville.

TVA has agreed to fund the project for six years, but with decreasing amounts over time. That means local officials are going to have to find ways to pay for it.

TVA boats were back on Lake Guntersville Wednesday, assessing areas that need treatment to remove lake weeds like hydrilla and milfoil.

Once the area is assessed, crews from Aqua Services in Guntersville are there to spray.

The authority is now fully implementing their lake weed program, and they said it is almost identical to the program which TVA cut back in 2010.

The goal is to find a balance for fishermen and recreational users of the lake, but TVA said this year the stakeholders group would be fully responsible for the cost after the six year period is complete.

"To be honest with you right now, that revenue source is not in place," said stakeholder group member Rick Roden. "That's one of the biggest challenges that we have, but TVA has agreed to help us create that source, whatever that may be."

TVA officials said for heavy traffic areas, they will put up buoys to help aid with navigation.
