SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) -

A Sheffield church is reaching out to families affected by the shutdown of Hillshire Brands.

Earlier this year, the company announced their decision to close the plant, leaving more than 1,100 people without a job by the end of the year.

Ekklesia Ministries in Sheffield decided to step in to help those families preparing to send their kids back to school.

Pastor Katenia Fitzgerald let me get a sneak peak at some of the goodies for the kids.

Church members have made contact with the parents to get a school supply list for the children. They then went and purchased items on those lists to make sure the kids started out the school year on the right foot.

On top of school supplies, the kids will be treated to free haircuts and a meal with their families during Wednesday's event.

"When you find yourself in what I like to call 'in between a rock and a hard place,' you always want somebody to be there and to assist you while you're getting back on your feet," said Fitzgerald. "It means the world to us."

Pastor Fitzgerald says she was thrilled to see the event take on a life of its own, and to see the passion people have for helping others.
