HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Fred Simpson, a former Madison County District Attorney, died Tuesday following a long illness at the age of 78.

A native of Birmingham, Simpson practiced law in Huntsville for more than 45 years, serving as District Attorney for 13. He was also a noted author, speaker and legal historian.

When not tending to matters of the law, Simpson was an avid artist; his charcoal and oil studies can be found throughout the Madison County Courthouse. One of his paintings was recognized by the Huntsville Museum of Art.

Visitation will be at Whitesburg Baptist Church on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with funeral to follow.
