HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville police stopped a man for speeding Sunday afternoon only to discover the driver had suffered a severe injury and was trying to transport himself to the hospital.

Police were soon investigating two scenes. The first scene developed around 1 p.m. at the 400 block of Edgemont Drive. Police determined there was an altercation between the driver and another man, believed to be related, in which both men were cut. The other man was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

From that scene, the driver began to drive himself to the hospital, until he was pulled over at a Shell station at the corner of Meridian Street and Oakwood Avenue. The officer that stopped the driver saw the injury was severe enough that he called for an ambulance to take the man the rest of the way.

The man was immediately taken in for surgery.

Police are still investigating the incident. Charges may be filed, pending information from the driver post-surgery.
